Wellness Committee News: December 2012

Our November Farm-to-School Day on Nov. 1 featured a hearty, cooking green called kale from Tantre Farm (www.tantrefarm.com).  The students enjoyed delicious green kale smoothies made with peaches, apples, strawberries, and of course, kale. Several of the kids came back for seconds, thirds, fourths…. 

Our next food tasting for Farm-to-School will be Thursday, Dec. 6 featuring Roasted Delicata Squash Wedges.  We will be sampling the light, mild-flavored Delicata Squash, a small, oblong heirloom winter squash, which is mostly yellow with long green stripes and extremely sweet flesh and edible skin.   We’ll also have various activities, examples of many varieties of winter squash, and recipes. Please be sure to ask your child about his or her experience on Farm to School Days! 
The Honey Creek Community pre-ordered 119 adult & 93 children’s Harvest dinner meals for our fundraiser. Net proceeds from the event were $1250 which has allowed us to begin buying produce for farm to school. Thank you to our wonderfully supportive community!!
FRUIT/VEGGIE BOWL:  Students received fresh, frost-sweetened carrots from the PTO this week from Tantre Farm.
