Welcome to the Honey Creek Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), supporting the social and academic goals of Honey Creek Community School (HCCS) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

If you’re an HCCS parent, you are automatically a PTO member. When we join the community we all sign a commitment to volunteer 2hrs/month at the school. The PTO has large and small volunteering opportunities. Please see the Volunteer Sign-Up Sheet via google docs for open positions. By volunteering to support the school you are helping to ensure that Honey Creek continues to provide an outstanding educational experience at every grade level.

Theme Committees

Wellness


Mission
The Honey Creek PTO Wellness Committee strives through collaboration with the community to promote lifelong, healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices through education, mental wellness initiatives, physical activity, and improving access to healthy food.


Programs

Several times during the year, we host mental health activities such as guest lectures and relevant film screenings. We also provide a Farm-to-School program that brings local farmers and food samples into the school and a thriving Edible Schoolyard Garden. We also host an annual Fall Harvest Dinner prepared by a local chef and with locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients,, recruit lunch line helpers at the beginning of the school year, assist with P. E. Play Day, distribute bags of maturation supplies to 4th and 5th grade students and support the school‘s annual Earth Day celebration.


How to Help

We invite all members of our community to participate in this committee. We welcome all interested people – no particular expertise is needed.

STEM

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, & MATH


Mission

The mission of the STEM Committee is to promote an interest in science, technology, engineering and math for all students at Honey Creek. We support students by encouraging hands-on activities both in and out of the classroom. Resources for teachers are sought to supplement lesson plans and promote continuing STEM education.


Programs

Annual events are organized including: Fall STEM Fest, STEM Fair @ Talent Night and the Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO). Additional STEM events throughout the community are also shared to promote involvement by Honey Creek families.

Please consider helping to inspire our students in STEM! The STEM Committee welcomes and appreciates new members at any time throughout the year.

Literacy


Mission
The mission of the Honey Creek and High Point Literacy Committee is to build the habit of and foster the love of literacy in all its forms among our joint communities.


Programs
The Literacy Committee fulfills its mission through a variety of programs throughout the school year, including: used book giveaways, March is Reading Month and promoting summer reading.


How to Help
Watch for announcements about donating gently used books for the March is Reading Month and summer reading book giveaways.
Support our Nicola’s fundraisers which raise funds for books!
Consider donating your time to help in the media center.

Arts


Mission Statement
The purpose of the Arts committee is to supplement our children’s arts experience while at Honey Creek both in providing support to our music and visual arts programs as well as offering unique art related opportunities outside the classroom.


Programs
We sponsor field trips to local museums, organize performances at school and work with Middle School students to produce and direct an annual school-wide Talent Night.


How to Help
We are always looking for fresh ideas and enthusiasm and welcome new members at any time. No Fine Art experience required.

Equity


Mission Statement
The HCCS Equity Committee strives to work collaboratively and intentionally toward: 1) a school climate that is inclusive of students of all backgrounds, in particular those of marginalized identities; and 2) a curriculum that recognizes and builds upon the diversity of the student body and aims to instill a social justice orientation in the school community.


Programs
The Equity committee provides professional development to all teachers, staff and administrators on culturally responsive teaching practices. We also aim to provide opportunities for the wider school community to engage in community discussions about justice and injustice in our local and broader community.

Room Parents

Room Parents (RPs) are central to building the Honey Creek community.

  • Communicate with the Teacher
  • Coordinate and set up Sign Ups for classroom supplies, snack donations, and fruit/veggie bowl
  • Plan the grade level social opportunities
  • Coordinate Classroom Volunteers
  • Encourage Event Volunteers
  • Lead money collections for holiday and end of year teacher Gifts (RP coordinator organizes)
  • Assist with Field Trip Planning
  • Schedule Holiday Pet Care
  • Coordinate Teacher Appreciation activities or gifts
  • Support Classroom Families (e.g. set up meal sign-ups during life transitions)
  • Support Academic Service-Learning
