STEM Committee News: November 2012

The STEM committee is proud to announce our first three Lunch with an Expert events: November 7, 2012 (Wednesday) – EMU professor Cara Shillington will talk about Michigan spiders.  Dr. Shillington developed a passion for the eight-legged creatures in college, and is always eager to share her love of spiders with kids and students. This will be a great opportunity to learn how spiders can be fascinating, and for some of us, possibly overcome the fear. November 16, 2012 (Friday) – Amy Krentzman, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, will talk about happiness and gratitude, how they can be measured, how we can tell if someone is happy or not, and if encouraging people to think about what they are grateful for could help them overcome challenges they face. December 7, 2012 (Friday) – Tim Andrews, Fire Fighter and County Hazardous Material Response Team Leader, will talk about what a Fire Fighter does, including fighting fires, responding to accidents and car crashes, responding to requests for medical assistance, providing first aid and emergency medical treatment and identifying hazardous chemicals spilled or released in an accident and cleaning them up in a safe manner.
The 2013 Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad is coming, and Honey Creek school will be recruiting 2nd – 5th graders to take part on our team! For a description of the Olympiad and a complete listing of all the event topics, check out the WESO website: http://www.aaps.k12.mi.us/wesowizards.home/home. Under the “Events” section you will find descriptions of all events. In order for Honey Creek to participate in an event, we’ll need 1) kids who want to compete in that event, and 2) a parent to coach the kids doing that event. We will be holding an informational meeting for students and parents in November. For more information, please contact Sara Brintnall, sarabrintnall@hotmail.com.
