Language Arts News:
The month of March has been exciting as the middle school reading and writing workshop has begun our study of the genre of science fiction. Thanks to some generous donations to the Phoenix Rising campaign, every student has had their own copy of the novel, The House of the Scorpion to take home and read. Many students are having a hard time putting the book down, and some have even reported having read it twice already!
So far we have had discussions on cloning, discrimination, nature vs nurture, and others. We have studied plot structure, and used Freytag’s pyramid as an outline for students to write their own science fiction stories. In addition, we studied the literary device of foreshadowing, using one of Roald Dahl’s more creepy short stories, “The Landlady.” It has been an interesting unit, so far, and the discussions will only become more complex as we work through the remainder of the novel!
