Academic Service Learning
Academic Service Learning is a vital part of the Honey Creek philosophy implemented in the classroom learning experience, as well as encouraged outside of regular school hours. Take a look at some of the following links for definitions, elements, opportunities and a handy service hours log:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. : King Day Event Kit
Our LEAGUE co-opetition (cooperative competition) this month is KING DAY. From January 6th-20th we’re inspiring compassion by honoring a national hero, Martin Luther King, Jr., and encouraging students and our entire community to perform acts of caring, respect, and fairness. Each classroom will be doing different activities and students are also encouraged to serve others outside of school. As a school, the students have decided to continue to collect pennies to support a “Kids Against Hunger” service-learning activity later in the school year. Did you know that $0.20 provides one meal to a hungry child? Your spare change CAN make a difference. For more information, visit:

and
Students and family members should record all of their acts of caring, respect, and fairness between January 6th-20th, 2010. There are recording sheets included in the attached King Day Event Kit (but you can also use the AS-L Service Hours Log). The kit also has great service ideas, conversation starters, and a chart of 100 Acts of Kindness if you want to work together as a family to see if you can achieve this goal!
On Monday, January 18th, storyteller La’Ron Williams will treat Honey Creek to a 9am performance (thanks to the generosity of the HCCS PTO). With the performance, the curriculum tie-ins, and the activities and conversations held at home, Honey Creek will truly be honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr!
Thank you for doing your part to make the dream a reality!
WHAT’S YOUR PLEDGE?
This year the entire Honey Creek community is making a pledge to make their school, home, town, country, and/or world a better place by changing ONE thing. Please complete a pledge card (available on the table in the A-wing hallway) so we can put all the cards into a community mural in the cafetorium and help each other fulfill our promises!

Thank you for all you do!
